Why Buy a Piano from Us? |
|
Once a piano has entered our shop, we begin the process of preparing it for sale. It is amazing how much dust works its way between the keys of a piano to settle on the keybed, just under the keys. Also, even though they are clean looking, in about one of three pianos we get there are mouse droppings under the keys. If the piano has been in a humid environment, there may also be mold and mildew. Every piano we sell has had the keys removed and the keybed thoroughly cleaned. |

piano to respond as it should. Few who sell used instruments have the shop capability to correct all these problems; however, this is just what we at Piedmont Piano Works do. |

Piano actions are complicated machines with about 10,000 parts. Every piano we see needs some kind of work. Perhaps the jack springs are weak, making repetition unsatis-factory (typical on vertical pianos from the 1960s and 1970s), or maybe the grommets attaching the keys to the abstracts on a spinet have become hard with age, making a clicking noise each time the key is used. Perhaps the parts are OK, but some of the myriad adjustments need to be made for the |

Our pianos also include standard local delivery (up to 4 stair steps), and a one-year warranty. |

Any used piano you might buy needs four things: cleaning, repairs and/or adjustments, moving, and tuning. What is under the keys? Dust? Mildew? Are the keys level? Are any parts loose, broken, or out of adjustment? Pianos weigh from 400 to 1200 pounds. Do you have the equipment and expertise to move yours? Or will you have to pay additionally to have the piano professionally moved? How about tuning? All these problems are solved on every piano we have for sale. First, we are very particular about the pianos we buy. There are many brands that have a history of poor design, cheap parts, or inadequate quality control during manufacture. Often these conditions change with time. Almost every American piano company has undergone at least one change of ownership during the past 50 years. Even Steinway has |

changed ownership; it was owned by CBS for several years during the 1970s. What is the goal of the new owners? Are they committed to preserving the quality of a revered line of great pianos? Or do they want to cut corners and milk all they can out of a great name? It is our responsibility to know, so that we can be sure to start with good material. |
|
Usually when a piano is being sold, it is because it has not been used for some time. If this is the case, it probably has not been tuned for a long time, either. Most used vertical pianos that come into our shop are a half-step or more low in pitch, and require three or more tunings to get them up to the proper pitch and stabilize them there. During the initial raising of the pitch it is not unusual for a string to break because of the change of tension. While this is not a serious problem, it is better corrected in our shop than in your home. Since new wire stretches under tension, the replaced string will require six to 8 tunings before it is stabilized. We are able to adjust the string every three or four days until it settles in. |
